As a supplement to last week’s special episode, I’d like to present two eerily beautiful songs:

The first, from Jack Clayton’s The Innocents (an adaptation of the Henry James’ novella The Turn of the Screw), opens the film, setting the tone for one of the more imaginatively creepy movies of the 1960s. Think the opening to Rosemary’s Baby (another lullaby, another adaptation), but sung by a child.

The next, from Charles Laughton’s The Night of the Hunter (yes! another adaptation), is sung by Pearl just after escaping the preacher/con artist/killer Harry Powell (played by Robert Mitchum). The Walter Schumann arrangement is moving, but watching this will shed more light on one of my favorite songs (and movie scenes) ever.
